Ataco: Guide to the Most Colourful Town on the Ruta de las Flores

Concepción de Ataco (Ataco) is one of the most photographed towns on the Ruta de las Flores: streets with murals, colourful façades, cafés and craft shops. Ideal for half a day or for staying overnight if you're exploring the route at a relaxed pace.

Why Go to Ataco

Ataco stands out for its murals on walls and façades, coffee from the area (tours and cafés) and a laid-back vibe. There are viewpoints over the valley and shops selling crafts and textiles. It's a nice contrast with Juayúa (more food-focused) and fits perfectly into a Ruta de las Flores trip.

What to See and Do

  • Streets and murals: wander at your own pace; every corner is photo-worthy.
  • Coffee: visit a finca or have a coffee at one of the town's spots.
  • Viewpoints: ask for the viewpoints; sunset views are lovely.
  • Crafts: there are shops for textiles, woodwork and souvenirs.

Where to Stay and Eat

There are hotels, hostels and cabins; book on weekends. For food, restaurants and cafés; the choice is smaller than in Juayúa but enough for a relaxed meal.

How to Get There

Ataco is on the Ruta de las Flores, after Juayúa. From San Salvador about 2 hours by car. Everything is walkable; the whole town is small.

Practical Tips

  • Go during the day to enjoy the colours and murals.
  • Combine with Juayúa (festival) or Apaneca on the same day.
  • Bring cash; many small shops don't take cards.
