Juayúa: What to See and Do on the Ruta de las Flores
Juayúa is one of the most visited towns on the Ruta de las Flores. It's known for its weekend food festival, nearby waterfalls and coffee-town vibe. This guide helps you make the most of your visit.
Why Go to Juayúa

The food festival (Saturdays and Sundays in the square) brings together stalls with traditional and creative food: meats, seafood, desserts and coffee. It's ideal for trying several dishes in one place. The centre has a church, park and quiet streets; and a few minutes away are waterfalls like Los Chorros de la Calera. Juayúa pairs well with Ataco and the rest of the Ruta de las Flores on a day trip.
What to See and Do
- Square and food festival: if you go on a weekend, eat at the plaza stalls; arrive early to choose and avoid long lines.
- Waterfalls: Los Chorros de la Calera and others are a few km away; reach by car or tour; wear suitable shoes.
- Centre and church: short walk around the main square and Santa Lucía church.
- Coffee: the area is coffee country; there are coffee tours and local cafés.
Where to Stay and Eat

There are hotels and hostels in the centre and nearby. Book ahead on weekends. For food, besides the festival there are restaurants; try the local coffee.
How to Get There
Juayúa is on the Ruta de las Flores, about 1.5–2 hours from San Salvador by car. The road is winding but in good condition. You can do the full route in a day or stay overnight in Juayúa or Ataco.
Practical Tips
- Weekend = food festival; weekdays = quieter, fewer stalls.
- Bring cash; not all stalls take cards.
- If you go to the waterfalls, bring clothes and shoes that can get wet.
