One Week Itinerary for El Salvador

Seven days go a long way in a small country like El Salvador. This itinerary mixes beach, charming towns, and nature, aimed at visitors from abroad with limited time.

Days 1–2: Arrival and coast (El Tunco or El Cuco)

Land at the airport and head to the coast. El Tunco is ideal for surf vibe and nightlife; El Cuco for a calmer beach. Two nights let you rest, try pupusas, and get a first swim or surf lesson. Check out our guide to the best beaches in El Salvador for more options.

Day 3: Ruta de las Flores

Drive up to the western highlands and explore the Ruta de las Flores: towns like Juayúa, Ataco, and Apaneca. Stop for lunch at a local restaurant or food market (weekends are livelier). One night in the area (e.g. Juayúa or Ataco) rounds off the day well.

Day 4: Suchitoto

In the morning head to Suchitoto, a colonial town by Lake Suchitlán. Stroll the center, visit a gallery or workshop, and optionally take a boat trip on the lake. Night in Suchitoto.

Day 5: Lake Coatepeque or San Salvador

Spend the day at Lake Coatepeque (swim, kayak, or just enjoy the view) or part of the day in San Salvador: historic center, museums, or shopping. If you're interested in the area, don't miss Santa Ana and its volcano. Night wherever you prefer (lake area or capital).

Day 6: Second beach or rest

Return to the coast for a last beach day (e.g. Costa del Sol or somewhere you haven’t been) or use it to relax and look back on the trip. Night on the coast.

Day 7: Departure

Transfer to the airport according to your flight. If you have time, one last pupusa or coffee before you go.

Practical tips

  • Renting a car gives you the most flexibility; otherwise combine shuttles and buses.
  • Book accommodation in advance during peak season (December–January, Easter).
  • Carry cash in US dollars; in small towns ATMs or card payment aren’t always available.
