Perquín and the Ruta de la Paz: History and Nature in Morazán
Perquín and the Ruta de la Paz (Morazán, northern El Salvador) combine recent history (civil war, Museum of the Revolution) with mountain landscape and quiet villages. It's a different kind of destination from beaches and volcanoes; ideal if you want to understand the country's history and see another side of El Salvador.
Why Go to Perquín

Perquín was a symbolic place during the armed conflict. Today it's home to the Museum of the Salvadoran Revolution, with objects, photos and testimonies from that time. The village is in the highlands, with cool weather and views. The Ruta de la Paz links several villages in Morazán (Perquín, Arambala, etc.) with viewpoints, trails and rural lodgings. You can combine it with La Palma if you have more days.
What to See and Do
- Museum of the Revolution: guided or on your own; it helps you understand the historical context. Limited hours; check in advance.
- Viewpoint and village: Perquín has viewpoints; the village is small and walkable.
- Ruta de la Paz: explore other Morazán villages; there are tours or you can drive with a map.
- Hiking: there are walking options in the area; ask at your lodging.
Where to Stay and Eat

There are simple lodgings and some rural stays. Food options are basic (comedores, small restaurants). Don't expect the same variety as on the Ruta de las Flores; the experience is more austere and authentic.
How to Get There
Perquín is about 3–4 hours from San Salvador. The road is winding; car or tour is recommended. Public transport is not frequent. Plan at least one full day or two if you want to see more villages on the Ruta de la Paz.
Practical Tips
- Bring cash; there are few ATMs.
- Comfortable clothes and a layer; it's cooler in the highlands than in the capital.
- Respect the tone of the museum and the communities; it's a place of memory.
