Eastern Beaches: El Cuco and the East Coast
Eastern El Salvador offers long beaches, palm trees and a calmer vibe than the La Libertad area. If you want fewer tourists and more relaxation, El Cuco and surroundings are a good bet.
El Cuco

El Cuco is the best-known beach in the east. Dark sand, gentle waves in much of the coast and a family vibe. There are hotels and hostels by the sea and fish restaurants. Ideal for several days of beach without the bustle of El Tunco. The drive is in good shape; from San Salvador it's about 3 hours.
Las Flores and Around
Near El Cuco is Las Flores and other eastern beaches. Some are more untouched and have fewer services; perfect if you want peace and quiet. Bring cash and some food and water if you head away from the main tourist spots.
What to Do

- Beach and sun: the main plan is to relax and swim. Waves are usually milder than on the central coast.
- Fish and seafood: coastal villages have restaurants serving fresh fish.
- Exploring: you can check out other coves by car or tour; ask at your lodging.
How to Get There
From San Salvador you drive east (about 180 km, ~3 hr). There are also buses to the area; tourist shuttles are less frequent than to El Tunco, so plan ahead. If you rent a car, check the vehicle and bring water for the drive.
Where to Stay
In El Cuco there are hotels and cabins by the sea; book ahead in peak season. In Las Flores options are more limited; there are simple lodgings. For more vibe and nightlife, the El Tunco and La Libertad area has more going on; for calm, the east is ideal.
