Money and ATMs in El Salvador: Traveler's Guide
El Salvador has used US dollars (USD) since 2001. For international travelers that simplifies things: no need to exchange currency. Here's what you need to know about money on your trip. If this is your first trip to El Salvador, this will save you some surprises.
Currency: US dollars only (USD)

Everything is paid in USD. Bring bills; you’ll see US cent coins and sometimes old colón coins (no longer used). You don’t need to change to another currency.
Cash
In small towns, markets, and many restaurants and transport, cash is still king. It's useful to carry a reasonable amount in smaller bills (e.g. $20 and $10) for day-to-day spending. Include cash on your packing list. In tourist areas and cities, card payment is more common.
ATMs

In San Salvador and cities there are ATMs that usually accept international cards (Visa, Mastercard). They may charge a fee; check with your bank. At the airport you'll also find ATMs upon arrival. In towns on the Ruta de las Flores, Suchitoto, or the coast, ATMs aren't always nearby, so it's better to withdraw cash in advance if you'll be there for a few days.
Cards
Hotels, mid-to-up-scale restaurants, and supermarkets often take cards. In pupuserías, buses, and small shops, cash is more common. Always have some cash as backup.
Tipping
Tipping isn’t mandatory, but in restaurants it’s normal to round up or leave about 10% if you’re happy with the service. For tours and guides, a cash tip is also appreciated.
Summary
- Currency: USD (cash and card where accepted).
- Cash: essential in towns and for transport; bring smaller bills.
- ATMs: more available in the capital and cities; in rural or beach areas, get cash beforehand.
- Cards: useful in hotels and restaurants; don't rely on them everywhere.
