Turismo Lago De Coatepeque El Salvador
Fuente: el salvador travel

The most epic day of the itinerary. You combine volcanic nature with one of the most beautiful lakes in Central America.

Option A: Hike Santa Ana Volcano (Ilamatepec)

Santa Ana Volcano (2,381 m / 7,812 ft) is the most popular hike in El Salvador. At the top, there's a turquoise crater lake that looks unreal.

Logistics:

  • Start: Cerro Verde National Park
  • Distance: 5.6 km (round trip)
  • Duration: 3-4 hours total
  • Difficulty: Moderate. You need basic fitness.
  • Schedule: Only with authorized guide. Departures at 7:00 and 11:00 AM.
  • Cost: $6 entrance + $3 mandatory guide
  • What to bring: Hiking shoes, water (at least 2L), snacks, jacket (it's cold at the top)

Book in advance during high season. Read our complete guide to El Salvador's volcanoes.

Option B: Relaxed Day (If You Don't Want to Hike)

If you prefer not to climb the volcano:

  • Visit the Cerro Verde viewpoint (views without the hike)
  • Spend the whole day at Lake Coatepeque

Afternoon: Lake Coatepeque

After the volcano (or instead of), head down to Lake Coatepeque—a volcanic crater lake with blue-turquoise waters.

What to do:

  • Lunch with a view: Restaurants like Pasatiempo or Rancho Alegre have terraces overlooking the lake.
  • Swim in the lake: The water is fresh and clean.
  • Kayak or paddleboard: Rental ~$10-15/hour.
  • Just contemplate: Honestly, the lake is so beautiful that just sitting and looking at it is worth it.

Night: Santa Ana or Lake Coatepeque

You have two options:

  1. Sleep at the lake: Hotels like Cardedeu or Torremolinos ($80-150). Unique experience.
  2. Sleep in Santa Ana: More options, cheaper, and you can see the historic center at night.

If you choose Santa Ana, check out the National Theater and Cathedral. El Salvador's second city has an underrated colonial center.

Day 4 Costs

Cerro Verde entrance + guide$9
Lunch at the lake$15-25
Kayak/paddleboard$15
Accommodation$50-100
Total~$90-150

  • Day 4: Express Ruta de las Flores (Ataco only)
  • Day 5: San Salvador and departure

If You're Into History

Replace one beach day with:

  • Perquín: Civil War Museum (full day, eastern region)

If You're Traveling with Kids

  • More time at Costa del Sol (calmer beaches than El Tunco)
  • Bicentennial Park in San Salvador
  • Skip the volcano hike (use the Cerro Verde viewpoint instead)

If You're a Surfer

Final Tips

  1. Book the volcano in advance during high season (Dec-Jan, Easter).
  2. Carry cash in small bills. ATMs aren't always available in small towns.
  3. Leave early each day to make the most of daylight and avoid afternoon rain (rainy season).
  4. Sunscreen and bug spray always in your bag.
  5. Travel insurance: Don't skip it. Our guide here.
  6. Flexibility: This itinerary is a guide. If you love a place, stay longer. El Salvador is small; you can always adjust.
