Surfing in El Salvador: Best Beaches, Schools and Tips

El Salvador has consistent waves and beaches for all levels. The La Libertad area (El Tunco, El Sunzal, La Libertad port) is the heart of surfing; there are also waves on the east coast. This guide covers beaches, schools and best season.

  • Quality waves for much of the year; March to October is usually the best window.
  • Lower prices than Costa Rica or Nicaragua; schools and board rental are affordable.
  • Short distances: several surf beaches within a few km; you can try different spots in one trip.
  • Vibe: El Tunco and surroundings are very surf-oriented; hostels, schools and an international crowd.

Best Beaches for Surfing

  • El Sunzal: long waves, good for beginners and intermediates; one of the most popular.
  • El Tunco: town beach, waves for various levels; ideal for staying several days and taking lessons. Full guide: El Tunco and La Libertad.
  • La Libertad (port): more technical breaks; better for intermediate and advanced.
  • El Cuco and east: if you want fewer people and wilder waves, the east coast has options; requires more planning.

Schools and Rental

In El Tunco and El Sunzal there are several surf schools offering lessons by the hour or by the day; they include board and sometimes wetsuit. Board rental is easy too. Compare prices and read reviews; most are beginner-friendly.

Best Season

March to October usually has the best conditions; June–August is very busy. In winter (November–February) there may be fewer waves or more wind; it doesn't mean no surf, but it's more variable. Check the forecast before booking if surf is the focus of your trip.

Practical Tips

  • Water-resistant sunscreen and rash vest if you don't want to burn.
  • If you're a beginner, start with a lesson; currents and breaks can be strong.
  • Bring cash to the beach; not all places take cards.
  • Combine surf with beaches for rest or the Ruta de las Flores if you want variety.
