How to Get Around El Salvador: Transport for Travelers

El Salvador is small; you can cross the country in a few hours. Here are the main transport options so you can choose what fits your trip.

Renting a Car

Renting a car gives you the most flexibility. Main roads are in good condition. You need a valid driver's license (your home country's is usually enough for up to 90 days for tourists). Fuel and tolls are paid in dollars. Drive carefully and don't leave valuables visible in the vehicle.

Public Buses

Buses are cheap and throw you into local life. They connect cities and towns; schedules aren't always posted, so ask at the terminal or bus stop. Keep your bag in sight. Ideal for a tight budget and short or medium trips.

Shuttles and Tours

Shuttles (private or shared) connect the airport, San Salvador and tourist spots (El Tunco, Ruta de las Flores, Suchitoto). They cost more than the bus but are comfortable and hassle-free. Many hostels and hotels can book them. Organized tours include transport and sometimes a guide; useful if you prefer not to plan every leg.

Taxis and Uber

In San Salvador and cities there are taxis; agree on the fare first or ask for the meter. Uber operates in the capital and some areas; prices are usually clearer. For long trips (e.g. airport–beach), shuttles are often cheaper than a taxi.

Approximate Distances

  • San Salvador – El Tunco: ~45 min
  • San Salvador – Suchitoto: ~1 hr
  • San Salvador – Ruta de las Flores: ~1 hr 15 min
  • San Salvador – El Cuco (east): ~3 hr

With these options you can plan your route. For a sample week, see our 7-day itinerary. For money, money and ATMs.
