Traveling to El Salvador with Kids: Tips and Destinations

El Salvador can work well as a family destination if you pick the right places and activities. Here are ideas and tips for traveling with kids.

Kid-Friendly Beaches

Calm-water beaches are best. Costa del Sol and some El Cuco coves have gentle waves and sand; avoid heavy surf breaks with small kids. Bring sunscreen, hats and keep kids out of the midday sun. Always supervise in the water.

Towns and Nature

Suchitoto is quiet and walkable; kids can run around the center and the boat trip on Lake Suchitlán is usually a hit. On the Ruta de las Flores (Juayúa, Ataco) the vibe is family-friendly; on weekends there are markets and food. Apaneca has mild adventure options (ziplines, etc.) that older kids can enjoy.

Food and Health

Local food includes options kids often like (cheese pupusas, rice, chicken). In restaurants ask for no spice if they're not used to it. Pack a basic first-aid kit (pain relievers, antihistamines, sunscreen, repellent) and make sure they have travel insurance. No mandatory vaccines for entry; check with your pediatrician for recommended ones.

Where to Stay

There are hotels with pools and green areas that work well for families. On the coast, choose places with a safe beach and shade. Book ahead in peak season.

Quick Tips

  • Keep journeys short and avoid too many hotel changes with little kids.
  • Bring entertainment for the road (tablet, games, books).
  • Cash in dollars; many places don't take cards.
  • Check our safety guide and what to pack first.

With a bit of planning, El Salvador can be a smooth family trip. More ideas in the one-week itinerary.
