  • Downtown: comedores, pupuserías and simple restaurants. Ideal for typical breakfast and local food at good prices. Go by day; at night the area is quieter.
  • Zona Rosa and nearby: more restaurants, bars and cafés; mid to high prices. Good for dinner or a more elaborate meal.
  • Shopping malls (Multiplaza, La Gran Vía, etc.): chains and restaurants with air conditioning and parking. Practical if you have a car.
  • Colonia San Benito and Escalón: residential area with various restaurants; calmer vibe.

What to Eat

  • Pupusas: at neighbourhood pupuserías or in markets; the most typical are cheese, bean or revueltas. See typical food.
  • Typical breakfast: beans, eggs, plantain; in comedores and cafés.
  • Seafood and meat: in Zona Rosa and mall restaurants.
  • Coffee: there are speciality cafés; Salvadoran coffee is excellent. See coffee and fincas.

  • In downtown bring cash; not everyone takes cards.
  • For dinner outside the centre, taxi or Uber are the safest; avoid walking at night in areas you do not know.
  • If you visit the historic centre, you can eat near the square or head to Zona Rosa later for more variety.
