Typical Salvadoran Breakfast: What to Try
The typical breakfast in El Salvador is usually hearty: beans, eggs, fried plantain, cheese, cream and sometimes chorizo or meat. It is served in comedores, cafés and restaurants across the country. This guide tells you what to order and what to expect.
What a Typical Breakfast Includes

- Beans (refried or whole), eggs (scrambled or fried) and fried plantain (ripe). This is the most common base.
- Cheese and cream (crema).
- Sometimes chorizo, meat or casamiento (beans with rice).
- Corn tortillas to accompany.
- Coffee or atol (hot maize drink); Salvadoran coffee is excellent.
It is a heavy breakfast; ideal if you have an active day (volcano, surf, touring). If you prefer something light, order just eggs with tortilla and coffee, or look for options in more modern cafés.
Where to Try It
In comedores and neighbourhood restaurants you will find it at a good price and very authentic. In hotels and tourist areas there is usually a "typical breakfast" on the menu. In towns like Suchitoto, Juayúa or in San Salvador there are options in the centre. For more food ideas, see typical food and where to eat in San Salvador.
Tips

- If you are not used to heavy breakfasts, ask for a half portion or share. Many places allow it.
- Coffee from the western region (Ruta de las Flores, Santa Ana) is among the best; take the chance to try it on finca tours.
