WiFi, SIM and Mobile Data in El Salvador
Getting internet in El Salvador is straightforward: WiFi in hotels and cafés, local SIM at the airport or in operator stores, or eSIM if your phone supports it. This guide sums up options and tips to stay connected.
WiFi

Most hotels, hostels and cafés in tourist areas have WiFi. Quality varies: in San Salvador and in places like El Tunco or Suchitoto it is usually okay; in remote villages it can be slow or unstable. For work or video calls, check reviews or ask before booking. If you're a digital nomad, this is especially important. Do not rely only on WiFi if you will be moving around or going to rural areas; a data plan gives you more freedom.
Local SIM
The main operators (Claro, Tigo, Movistar) sell prepaid SIMs at the airport, malls and shops. You need your passport to register the line. Data packages are cheap; ask for tourist plans. The SIM activates in minutes. If your phone is locked to your home operator, you will not be able to use a local SIM unless you unlock it.
eSIM

If your phone supports eSIM, you can get a data plan for El Salvador before you travel from international providers (Airalo, Holafly, etc.). You arrive with data already active; no need to change the physical SIM. Useful if you do not want to queue at the airport.
Practical Tips
- Bring cash to buy a SIM; not all shops take cards.
- On beaches and volcanoes coverage can be patchy; download offline maps just in case.
- If you use Uber or similar apps, having data makes getting around much easier.
