Fireballs Festival of Nejapa (August 31)

One of the world's most unique festivals. Residents of Nejapa divide into two sides and throw fuel-soaked rag balls at each other... while on fire.

History: According to legend, in 1658 the San Salvador volcano erupted and residents annually recreate the "fireballs" that emerged from the volcano, in honor of Saint Jerome.

What to expect:

  • Hundreds of participants throwing fire
  • Party atmosphere (but watch out for the fireballs)
  • Food and drinks nearby

Tips:

  • Arrive early for a good spot
  • Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty or burned
  • Don't carry flammable items
  • Keep your distance if you don't want to participate
  • Nejapa is 20 km from San Salvador; you'll need transportation
