San Salvador: What to See in the Capital in One or Two Days
The capital is usually a point of arrival or a stopover. In one or two days you can cover the basics: historic center, a museum and El Boquerón. Here's a practical guide.
Historic Center

The downtown area has the Metropolitan Cathedral, National Palace and National Theatre. The zone is busy by day; walk normally, watch your belongings and avoid empty areas at night. Nearby are shops, cafés and food stalls. A few hours are enough for a first impression.
Museums
MARTE (Museum of Art) and MUNA (National Museum of Anthropology) are solid options for art and history. Check hours and exhibits before going. Tin Marín (children's museum) is good if you're traveling with kids.
Markets

The central market and other local markets show everyday city life: fruit, food, crafts. Go by day and carry only what you need. If you like local atmosphere, it's an authentic experience.
El Boquerón (San Salvador Volcano)
A short drive away is El Boquerón, the crater of the San Salvador volcano. There's a viewpoint and trail; you can combine it with a morning or afternoon in the city. See volcanoes in El Salvador for more options.
Shopping and Modern Life
For malls, international restaurants or calmer nightlife, the commercial zones (Multiplaza, La Gran Vía, etc.) have cinemas, stores and restaurants. Many visitors stay there and use the center for daytime visits.
Practical Tips
- Getting around: taxi or Uber in the city; for El Boquerón, car or tour.
- Cash: bring dollars; not everywhere takes cards.
- Safety: use common sense; at night avoid empty areas and ask your lodging which zones to avoid.
San Salvador isn't usually the main dish of the trip, but with this guide you can use it well. To continue your route, transport in El Salvador and one-week itinerary.
